Kids Braces - Anyone can have their teeth alignment corrected—kids, teens and even adults! Treatment duration varies, depending on your age, tooth condition and orthodontic appliance. Find out more about the different options available to you and your family. Everyone deserves beautiful straight teeth.

Adult Braces - Straight teeth reduce the amount of plaque that gathers in crevices, and less plaque can lower your chances for gum disease, which has been linked to heart disease and diabetes. Straighter teeth also allow for better brushing, keeping your teeth healthier and in place for longer!

Invisalign - The cost of Invisalign® treatment is similar to braces, but that’s where the similarity ends. Invisalign clear aligners are removable and virtually invisible, so you can keep living your life and caring for your teeth throughout treatment the same way you always have.

Metal Braces - Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces are more comfortable today than ever before. Metal braces straighten your teeth using arch wires arch wires and metal brackets. You have the option of adding coloured elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colourful smile.

PEDIATRIC OERHODONTICS FAQ's

interceptive orthodontics

Is orthodontics for everyone?

Dr. Lyna Naseri, pediatric orthodontist St. John's: "Anyone can have their teeth alignment corrected—kids, teens and even adults! Treatment duration varies, depending on your age, tooth condition and orthodontic appliance."

Ask to see an orthodontist in St. Johns to find out more about the different options available to you and your family. Everyone deserves beautiful, straight teeth.

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontic treatments in St. John's are used to correct tooth and jaw alignment and function. Different appliances can be used to apply slight pressure and gradually shift teeth to the right position.

Orthodontic treatments can correct various problems, including:

  • Misaligned teeth
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Weak chin
  • Spaces between teeth
  • Asymmetrical mouth
  • And much more

What are the benefits of  St. John's orthodontic treatments?

Restoring full tooth function. When your teeth are properly aligned, you can chew more effectively.

Improving oral health. Since overlapping teeth are hard to clean, they can make you more prone to cavities or gum disease.

There are many other benefits to orthodontic treatments in St. John's, such as reducing facial muscle pain, giving you a more beautiful smile and promoting better self-esteem!

What are Interceptive orthodontics?

Interceptive orthodontic treatments are sometimes recommended to young children who still have primary teeth. Early interventions can correct problems that, if left untreated, could damage teeth and surrounding tissues or negatively impact jaw development.

Interceptive treatments are considered phase 1 treatments and are often followed by a subsequent intervention during adolescence. By creating the right conditions for proper mouth and bone growth, interceptive treatments can make it easier to perform future corrections.

When are interceptive treatments recommended by a St. Johns pediatric orthodontist?

  • Anterior gap (when the front teeth don’t touch) caused by habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrust
  • Overlapping or crowding caused by insufficient space
  • Delayed dental growth
  • Narrow palate which can be resolved with a palatal expander

Pediatric orthodontist St. Johns: recommendations for oral hygiene and diet

orthodontics oral hygiene

Patients need to be on board in order for an orthodontic treatment to be successful. Brushing your teeth can prevent gingivitis, cavities and stains. You also need to care for your orthodontic appliance by cleaning it regularly and avoiding foods that could damage it.

Oral hygiene with dental appliances

Dental appliances can trap small particles of the food you eat. You might not see them, but they are there. These particles feed the cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. It’s important to remember that orthodontic appliances don’t cause cavities, but insufficient care of your device can lead to dental decay.

That’s why you should brush your teeth carefully after every meal or snack. Patients should also diligently follow all the oral hygiene instructions prescribed to them.

Helpful hints from your orthodontist in St. John's

  • Brush your teeth for 2 whole minutes
  • Use a soft-bristled brush with a small head
  • Floss every day
  • Use dental picks (that look like little pine trees) for hard-to-reach places

Food choices and “bad” habits

Maintain a balanced diet and stay away from hard or sticky foods. Avoid chewy candy, granola bars or chewing gum. Break bad habits such as:

  • Biting into foods with your front teeth
  • Chewing vigorously
  • Gnawing on hard objects (like pencils)
  • Biting your nails
  • Using your teeth to open packages

Even though maintaining your oral health routine can seem burdensome at times, remember that it’s important for your health. Low on motivation? Set some challenges for yourself!

Permanent orthodontic Appliances

palatal expanders

Which are the most common orthodontic appliances?

The most commonly used type of orthodontic appliances are permanent ones. These are traditional braces with brackets and wires.

Today, braces are smaller than in the past and are therefore more discreet. Self-ligating braces are more comfortable and easy to clean.

What are palatal expanders and spacers?

Palatal expanders can either be permanent or removable. They are used to expand the upper jaw if your palate is too narrow. Palatal expansion carried out during phase 1 orthodontic treatments creates space for permanent teeth to come in. It can reduce crowding by giving teeth more room.

Spacers don’t move teeth. They simply maintain the space that is already available. Spacers are often used to prevent teeth from shifting in children who lose a primary tooth prematurely.

What are Hawley retainers?

Hawley retainers are temporary appliances used to shift a specific group of teeth or to maintain tooth position after braces are removed.

Face masks and headgear

Face masks are often recommended when the upper jaw is not long enough from front to back. They are often combined with palatal expanders and worn 12 to 24 hours per day to draw the upper jaw forward and downward.

Technology and pediatric orthodontics

digital xrays

Our pediatric orthodontists are equipped with the latest orthodontic technologies and proud to offer modern, personalized care. Computer-assisted design is a definite asset used in our practice in St. Johns.

iTero digital impressions

iTero is a 3D digital scanner that creates a reproduction of your teeth and gums in just a few minutes. The procedure is safe, comfortable and produces very precise results.

What are the benefits of digital impressions?

  • High quality images
  • Helpful diagnostic tool
  • 3D modelling of orthodontic treatments
  • Preview of final results
  • Custom appliance design and manufacturing
  • Improved communication with the patient
  • Better patient cooperation

3D x-rays

X-rays are an essential diagnostic tool in dentistry. By providing a clear view of the bone, teeth and jaw, they allow us to detect lesions that aren’t otherwise visible.

Dental x-rays are very safe and useful for diagnosing the following:

  • Tooth lesions: cavities and malformations
  • Bone lesions: cysts, abscesses, cancer, etc.
  • Tooth position and tooth count
  • Bone loss
  • Jaw abnormalities

Digital X-Rays

Digital x-rays are often taken as part of a dental check-up. The images help us see between teeth, inside teeth and the supporting bone. We usually take them once per year, though the frequency can vary, depending on your dental health.

An x-ray machine looks like a robot that takes photos of your mouth. There are several types of x-rays, but all are taken directly at the clinic.

What do digital x-rays show us?

  • Very safe
  • Taking images is fast and comfortable
  • Images are available instantly
  • Good image quality
  • Digital records (for future reference and forwarding as needed)

Advantages of digital X-Rays

  • Number of teeth
  • Early cavities
  • Abscessed teeth
  • Position of teeth
  • Existence and position of wisdom teeth
  • Temporomandibular joint

One of the major advantages of digital x-ray images is that they allow our pediatric orthodontists in St. Johns to monitor the angle at which children’s teeth are coming in.

Common orthodontic emergencies

orthodontic emergency

Orthodontic emergencies are usually benign and do not require immediate attention. Here are a few tips on dealing with common problems.

  • If a bracket becomes unglued, orthodontic wax can be used to stabilize it.
  • If you lose a bracket, contact us to find out if you need to come in.
  • If your appliance causes irritation inside your cheeks, rinse your mouth with salt water. If necessary, apply orthodontic wax.
  • If your wire is too loose, it can irritate the inside of your cheek. Rest assured that this is usually a sign that your teeth are shifting and the gaps between them are closing. Most often, you can simply apply wax and wait until your next appointment. However, if it is very uncomfortable, give us a call.
  • If you experience an orthodontic emergency, call us right away. We’ll determine whether you require immediate attention or a more complex repair.

If you experience pain or unusual movement of your teeth, you should be assessed right away. For example, call us if you are involved in an accident causing damage to your teeth or orthodontic appliance.
