Gingivitis is a benign disease caused by an accumulation of bacteria (dental plaque). This biofilm (white substance) goes under your gums and causes inflammation. Gingivitis and periodontitis symptoms are similar.
Fortunately, gingivitis can be treated.
First, a dental hygienist will clean and polish your teeth, removing all the plaque and tartar. After that, you will have to take very special care of your oral health, brushing three times a day and flossing once a day, preferably before bed.

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can lead to periodontitis. This condition is characterized by bacteria attacking your gums, bone and other structures that hold your teeth in place.
